Southampton Solent’s ongoing work with the Ukrainian Language Club completed the year by financially supporting their Christmas party.
The money went towards the food, hire of the hall and Christmas presents for the children. Each child received a Ukrainian reading book – each appropriate for their age. The books’ transportation from Ukraine to the UK had been arranged by the families.
The children entertained the ‘grown -ups’ with their performances of Ukrainian Christmas songs and the acting out of traditional Ukrainian stories. Afterwards they were allowed to get to the food – prepared by the many mums in typical Ukrainian style!
The importance of retaining their home culture, traditions and language is the reasoning behind our support and it is great to see the children’s language development (in more than one language) and general happiness.
There are increasing amounts of interest from Ukrainian families in other parts of our area – the club we are supporting has provided a successful template for others thinking of developing their own projects.
Our support with stationery, cultural activities etc will be ongoing as long as they need us.
